 Testosterone cyclovalproate and testosterone heptanate provide extremely comparable patterns of testosterone release. Not only is the physical advantage impossible to place on one another, but the actual differences in pharmacokinetic patterns are hardly noticeable (the two drugs are functionally interchangeable for all intents and purposes). The only key difference between the two seems to be user comfort. For a small subset of patients, cyclopropionate is less irritating than heptanate at the injection site. This makes testosterone cypropionate a more favorable option for those with recurrent problems with pain at the heptanate injection site. This difference may be related to the early development of this testosterone ester as a commercial pharmaceutical product. The main clinical use of testosterone propionate has historically been for the treatment of low androgen levels in men, although the drug is also present in many other applications. For example, in the 1960s, the drug was prescribed to support bone structure maturation, in the treatment of menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and excessive lactation in women, to increase muscle mass and to combat osteoporosis in the elderly. It is also recommended to increase male fertility, induce testosterone/spermatogenesis inhibition (200 mg testosterone cyclopropionate per week for 6 to 10 weeks), and may result in a period of sperm rebound (temporarily higher than normal gonadotropin). By the 1970s, the FDA had gained stronger control over the prescription drug market, and it was the first indication that the widespread use of testosterone was now improving. "Testosterone rebound therapy," for example, proved unreliable as a way to improve male fertility, especially in the face of newer, more effective drugs, and was quickly eliminated from prescribing guidelines. The same is true for treatment of problems such as excessive menstrual bleeding and breastfeeding.
