BPC 157 is a natural gastric pentapeptide with non-toxic and deep cell protective activity, which has been used in ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis tests. BPC 157 is stable in human gastric juice for more than 24 hours, so it has good oral bioavailability and has beneficial effects throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Stable BPC 157 is thought to be a Robert cell protective mediator that maintains the integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosa. The protective effect of BPC 157 on Robert cells and its ability to resist lesions caused by direct contact between harmful substances and cells represent the peripheral connection between the gut and the brain axis.

Recent studies have shown that BPC 157 has a direct therapeutic effect (i.e., counteracting hippocampal ischemia/reperfusion injury) in post-stroke rats. BPC 157 treatment resulted in upregations of Egr1, Akt1, Kras, Src, Foxo, Srf, Vegfr2, Nos3 and Nos1 and downregulation of Nos2 and Nfkb compared with untreated rats (with unactivated Mapk1). Significant upregulation of Egr1 and Vegfr2 suggests that BPC 157 has vascularized properties, a mechanism that may underlay its ability to regulate ischemia-reperfusion injury. The most interesting findings were strong upregulation of Nos3, slight upregulation of Nos1 and inhibition of Nos2 compared with control animals. These effects may provide a novel treatment for stroke.
